The Beauty of Talalay Latex

If you do your research while shopping for a mattress, you’re sure to come across the option of a latex bed. Urban Mattress offers several lines that incorporate Talalay latex, a 100% natural rubber that provides an incredible combination of support and comfort.

Is all latex the same?
There are slight differences between the two natural types of latex: Talalay and Dunlop. These names refer to the manufacturing process. We mostly use Talalay latex, which is made by collecting the sap from rubber trees, then pouring it into a mold that’s been vacuumed of air to prohibit contamination by outside elements. It’s frozen in the mold and shipped over to the US where it’s washed seven times to get rid of natural sediment. Air is introduced to the rubber to achieve the desired density, then it’s baked into the final product. The result is a 100% natural rubber that has a uniform consistency.

Beware of latexes that aren’t 100% natural. You can usually pick them out by the lack of specificity and the lower price. These use a blend of latex and synthetic additives that will reduce the quality and life of the mattress. When people have latex allergies, they’re typically allergic to the additives in these synthetic types. We only use 100% natural latexes at Urban Mattress.

So what’s the big deal?
Latex is an awesome alternative to a traditional innerspring mattress for several reasons. First, it’s an incredibly resilient material and will last for a long time without developing body impressions. All of our latex mattresses come with a 20-year warranty. What else do you own that will last for two decades of daily use?

Second, and perhaps most important, it does a fantastic job of giving you the spine support you need while being soft enough to eliminate pressure points on spots like your shoulders and hips. Latex tends to have a pretty firm feel, even in its softer densities, and is very popular with back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers will typically choose a softer latex or a bed with a combination of latex and cushier soy-based foams to achieve the perfect combination of support and comfort. People who don’t like the sinking, gooey feel of memory foam almost always fall in love with a latex mattress, because it still conforms to the curves of your body but keeps you on top of the mattress instead of sinking into it.

Talalay latex is also naturally temperature-neutral and resistant to dust mites and allergens. Add that to the fact that it’s 100% natural, and you’re sleeping on a cloud of worry-free comfort.

So which beds at Urban Mattress are latex?
We offer several latex mattresses manufactured specifically for us, and they’re as natural as you can get. They come in various firmness levels and are some of our biggest sellers. We almost never see comfort exchanges or warranty claims on them as they’re some of the longest-lasting and most consistent beds we offer.

Our Urban Naturals mattresses have several options that use Talalay latex combined with different combinations of soy-based foams to achieve a variety of unique feels. From luxuriously soft to extra-firm, customers can find the perfect feel while knowing they’ll be getting great support for years to come.

Our salespeople would be happy to answer all of your questions about latex and walk you through the options so you can find your dream bed. Come say hi at your nearest store soon!
