Sleep Well, Eat Well

Good sleep is essential to good health, there’s no doubt about it. After over 30 years in the sleep industry, we have learned that there is not one aspect of our lives in which sleep does not effect. The well-being of our bodies, minds, and hearts are all deeply related to the quality of rest we are getting. This means we have the opportunity every day to make choices that will either heal or harm our bodies, our families, our communities, and our environment. Although it is easy to live a more carefree life and put less thought into daily choices; we are missing out on the vibrancy that life has to offer.

The simple truth is that if we are not sleeping well; we are not living to our full potential. Sleep affects how we feel, look, perform and even eat on a daily basis. One aspect we are seeing our own lives improve from good sleep is that we are encouraged to eat better throughout the day. When we wake up after a night of deep, regenerative sleep, our bodies are alert and more in tune with what we actually need; not what we just crave.
The University of California, Berkeley, Scientists explain “If you are deprived of sleep, when you see high-calorie food your brain reacts differently and gets more excited. Also, with a lack of sleep, you are more prone to give in to temptation. But sleep well, and suddenly those unhealthy snacks don’t look anywhere near as appealing.” This is yet another example of why good sleep equal good health.

It is also true that when you don’t get enough sleep, the levels of your stress hormone Cortisone rises which leads to fat gain. Cortisol triggers reward centers in your brain that make you hungry and crave food. Loss of sleep also causes your body to produce more ghrelin, which is known as the “hunger hormone”. With high levels of these two hormones being released, you will feel hungry all the time – even if you just ate.

We live and work in cities where health is highly valued, as it should be. With plenty of access to natural grocery stores, farm to table restaurants, organic options, and farmers markets we have no excuse not to take even small steps to becoming our healthiest selves. We want to live VIBRANTLY. Fueling our selves with vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants, and whole grains is necessary. While it is still the season of resolution, we claim the choice to live well. This year we want to glow, from the outside in. What we eat and sleep on is a powerful place to start.

If your sleep is disturbed throughout the night, you are waking up with aches and pains, you feel sluggish throughout your day, you may need a new mattress. Visit one of our local showrooms to talk to a sleep expert and lay down on our natural quality products. We don’t only want our neighbors to sleep well. We want them to work well, love well, eat well, play well, shop well, and wake up well!
