When we started Urban Mattress, we looked around and saw some things. We saw people in our community and around the world that were hurt, hungry, in need of the basic necessities that we took for granted. Not only food, clothing, medicine and shelter, but love, safety and understanding. We also saw some incredibly bright, driven people who could have easily had highly successful and lucrative careers give their lives to providing comfort to the downtrodden instead of themselves. In short, we saw humanity at its best, making sacrifices from a place of love rather than ambition, in order to benefit humanity at its most vulnerable and needy.
It was inspiring, to say the least. And we weren’t ready to look in the mirror everyday with the knowledge that while others were giving up riches for the sake of strangers’ comfort, we were squeezing every penny out of these rectangular pieces of foam.
So we decided that Urban Mattress would be different. We would be in the business of making people comfortable. Not only those who came in and bought a mattress, but those who will never hear our name, never know that the hot meal or warm bed they received when they had no options was made possible by our funding.
In each of our mattress stores, the owners choose four local charities, with the input of the community, which will receive 2% of their proceeds. Customers can even choose which charity their money goes to. We’re thrilled to have this opportunity to turn our blessings into a lifeline for others in their time of need and hope our small sacrifice encourages others to look beyond themselves. After all, life becomes beautiful when you shift the focus from personal gain to selfless love.
