Successful Mattress Shopping in Five Simple Steps

Mattress shopping can be daunting. We know that many people dread it. And they dread it for good reason—after all, we spend roughly a third of our lives in bed, so choosing a new mattress is a big deal! Yet many people have had unsavory mattress-buying experiences in the past, and so they put off the process as long as possible. Don’t do that! Sleep is too important. Just follow these five simple steps for an easier, painless path to better sleep.

  1. Determine what you need.If you’re tossing and turning at night and/or waking up stiff, chances are you need a new mattress. The lifespan of the typical mattress is 8-10 years, although that varies based on the model. Before heading to a store, do your research on options and know your particular must-haves and would-like-to-haves. For example, if you and your partner are feeling cramped or having other sleep troubles, consider upgrading to a king to give yourselves more space.
  2. Know your priorities. Identify what you value most (for example, organic materials, durability/longevity, comfort, etc.) as these values will impact the options that salespeople show you. It is also a good idea to have a ballpark budget in mind because that will also impact your options.
  3. Choose the right store—a place you can feel comfortable. Ask friends and family for recommendations and check Yelp and Google reviews online. Look for a store with a proven record of trustworthiness where you’ll receive the right level of attention. At Urban Mattress we are honored by in the word-of-mouth recommendations that drive our sales, as they speak to the way we strive to do business with honesty and integrity. The mattress industry as a whole doesn’t have the best reputation, but we’re working hard to change that! (But don’t take our word for it—look online.)
  4. Use the salespeople’s knowledge. If you don’t feel your salesperson is knowledgeable and honest, go elsewhere. We believe salespeople should listen carefully to what you need and want as well as what you want to pay. They should be well informed about sleep and the features of the products they offer. And they should not be pushy. We train our salespeople according to this philosophy and hold them accountable to it.
  5. Test-drive each mattress before you buy. Lie down on each one in your regular sleep position(s) to see how it feels. And don’t rush! Take a 15-minute nap to be sure you relax as you would when you’re sleeping at home. This will help you get a real feel for each mattress and ensure you get the right one!

We’re in the mattress business because good sleep is super important and we believe we can help our neighbors rest better. After all, we sleep on the mattresses we sell! Hopefully this quick list helps you find the best mattress for you and thus the best sleep of your lives. Come in and see us some time. And Sleep Tight, Urbanites!
