Mattress Quality Equals Sleep Quality

If you thought the quality of your mattress didn’t make a difference, think again.

According to this article from the Huffington Post and a study by Research Triangle International and Drs. Andy Krystal and Jack Edinger from Duke University, you may not have to be a princess with long blonde hair and a pink dress to feel the ever so elusive pea under your mattress. Their four-year study looked at how different support levels of mattresses impacted sleep, pain and daytime functioning. More than 16,000 nights of sleep were evaluated on 128 subjects, making this one of the largest studies ever completed on normal pain-free sleepers and how mattresses impacted their health.

Still think the quality of your mattress doesn’t matter?

At Urban Mattress, we hold our mattresses to a high standard and we believe that quality truly does matter.

The Quality We Hold Ourselves To

Our number one priority is our customers getting a great night’s sleep. That’s why we do not charge any additional delivery, set up or removal fees. We only focus on exclusive high-end products and technologies like Vi-Spring, Tempur-Pedic and natural mattresses versus the traditional coil mattress. We are always on the lookout for high quality brands based on mercy, Justice and humility. Check out our full selection of mattresses to learn more.

Why Picking Your Ideal Mattress While You’re Awake May Not Work So Well

We pass through different stages of sleep each night. You’ve probably heard a lot of emphasis being placed on “rapid eye movement” or REM sleep. This is the stage of sleep where our most vivid dreams take place. To prevent us from acting out our dreams and being swept up in a full-blown civil war enactment (if that’s your thing), we lose skeletal muscle tone. The skeletal muscles that support our back relaxes and we lose spinal support. Therefore, a mattress that felt nice and supportive while you were awake with the muscles active may, and most likely will, perform differently when you are in REM sleep—also known as the time when you get the best quality zzz’s.

When It’s Time to Part with your Old Mattress

Saying goodbye to your old, faithful mattress can be hard. I mean, you two shared a long life together. But our bodies actually change over time, according to WebMD and that mattress that may have been a perfect fit for you in your 20s may not work so well for your body in your 30s.

Mattresses also collect fungus, dust mites and other germs that can perk up your allergies and impact your sleep patterns. And according to WebMD, after 10-to-15 years, it’s time to think about buying a new mattress anyways.

You may feel a little silly, but it’s a good idea to drift away and take a short 10-to-15-minute nap on any potential new mattress before you buy. After all, the experts say the best bed for you is one that feels the most comfortable.

Also remember that getting enough shut-eye is the key to any good night’s sleep, good mattress or not.

Happy mattress shopping!
