8 Important Tips for Buying Organic and Natural Mattresses

Organic and natural mattresses are different from the usual types of mattresses available, so buying the type that fits you and your lifestyle the best is important to consider.

While we have all shopped for a regular mattress at some point or another in our lives, buying a natural or organic mattress is a slightly different process.

But before you worry that buying a natural mattress is more difficult than buying a traditional mattress, things have changed drastically over the last few decades.

As this article points out, finding a bed that isn’t bad for the environment used to be a daunting process. But now, with an ever-growing selection of eco-friendly mattresses, the process has become a bit more serene and simple.

The good news is that choices once limited to size and firmness now include environmental options as well. If you prefer an innerspring mattress—steel coils surrounded by layers of fluffy padding—you can rest easy on beds made from organic cotton and wool, with steel coils that aren’t coated in chemicals.

So, if you have plans of buying a new mattress this year, why not go organic and eco-friendly?

Unsure where to start? Here are eight tips for buying an all natural, non-toxic mattress.

Use your nose when making a selection. – As the aforementioned article points out, choosing an organic bed without volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is key to your health. If you are uncertain about the details involved with your new mattress, do some research on the topic before you dish out the money.

Check the materials. – Materials that are unbleached, don’t contain dyes, and haven’t been chemically treated are the aspects that you should be looking out for in an organic mattress, and it should be this way inside and out. Anything less than those standards and you aren’t buying true organic.

Read deeper. – While it’s fine to be attracted to the large print, you’ll benefit most by digging a little deeper into the material and citation list. If a company truly wants your business, they’ll go the extra mile and list where their materials are sourced from.

Trust a third-party certification. – A third-party certification label is your friend in the organic mattress buying world. Third-party certifications included on an organic mattress prove to you that their product is 100% organic and natural, and it has been sourced organically and from a sustainable resource.

Natural latex. – Do not be turned off by a term with the word “latex” in it. Natural latex is made from rubber tree sap and is completely natural, as the name implies. Plus, when compared to man-made products, natural latex is as durable and long-lasting as traditional rubber.

Examine the fill/batting. – Keep in mind that all organic mattress companies use natural bedding fibers for their padding. Most soft padding on the top of a mattress is made from natural cotton and wool, not typical mattress ingredients. When buying a mattress with this type of batting, read your instructions on how to keep them clean.

No springs or coils? That’s correct! – Not all natural mattresses have springs or coils. Some mattresses have natural foam as a means for back support, which also means that they eliminate the negative space where dust mites proliferate. Just think about that the next time you lay down on your traditional spring mattress.

Organic oils are good! – Unlike traditional mattress materials, which often feature foam made from petroleum products, many organic mattress companies choose to manufacture their foam from plants. So, if you had a choice, would you rather sleep on petroleum? Or on plant fibers? Yeah, we thought you might choose the latter.

If you have the option in your mattress buying adventure, always choose a mattress made from organic and natural materials. Your body, health, and night’s rest will all be better for it.
